Another influential musician from the Soviet period passed away. The leader and accordionist of the band Orkestr Vermishel', Sergei Shchurakov, died after surgery complications at the age of 47 on August 7th 2007. Before founding Orkestr Vermishel' in 1995 he played with Boris Grebenshchikov's Akvarium and Sergei Kurekhin's "Pop-mekhanika".
I heard Orkestr Vermishel' perform September 2005 in St. Petersburg. It was a quite interesting concert - in a jazz club (JFC Jazz Club), not a rock club. Their music sounds like a mixture of rock, funk, jazz and Western art music with a touch of Irish and French "folk" music (After playing the album "Анабасис" (1996/2001) for my neighbors yesterday they placed it somewhere between Italian and Breton music. They were surprised when they found out that it was a Russian group). The group's consistence besides Guitar, Bass and Drums includes Accordion, Oboe, Cello, Violin and Flutes. This gives the songs a special texture and together with the frequent change of rhythms a unique sound.
See the obituary in the St. Petersburg Times (English) and at Радио Свобода (Russian). For more information about Orkestr Vermishel' check either their website http://www.vo.org.ru/ or the encyclopedia section of Rock-N-Roll.ru.

As an italian, I'm wondering why the band has got an italian name: "Vermicelli Orchestra". Looking at the group's discography, it seems to me that the band's name became more and more russian: "Vermicelli Orchestra" (1998-2000), "Вермишель orchestra" (2001), "Оркестр Вермишель" (2004).
In Vermicelli Orchestra played also very famous rock musicians, like Vs. Gakkel' (ex Akvarium) and N. Kadyrov (ex Zoopark)
