Remembering Viktor Tsoi

August 15th, 1990: Viktor Tsoi, the singer and leader of the St. Petersburg group “Kino” fell asleep while driving his car and fatally crashed against a bus. 17 years has passed since then, but his memory has only slightly faded over time.
Tsoi couldn’t see the fall of the Soviet Union, but neither the crisis of the soviet rock movement: it could be said that he died in the best time to become a myth, the symbol of the “golden era” of russkii rok.
The old generation of singers, like B.G., Maik, Shevchuk, Kinchev, etc., dedicated some verses or whole songs to Kino’s leader. Dmitrii Reviakin’s poem “Iagoda” (Berry, 1998) ends with these words:

To die immortal
Like Tsoi

Tequilajazzz, one of the more interesting groups of the new generation, begins his first album (Streliali, 1993) with a short quotation of Tsoj’s “Gruppa krovi” (Blood group). Even Leningrad’s singer Sergei Shnurov, making fun of almost every Russian rock group of the past and the present, considered Gruppa krovi “his favorite song”, as he wrote in a composition with the same title (in Dachniki, 2000). All kinds of Russian musicians participated to Viktor Tsoi’s tribute, in 2000 http://www.zvuki.ru/M/P/4461.
It seems that Kino is the only rock group that almost all Russians like, at least the generation from 30 to 50 years.

Walking down “Stari Arbat”, one of the more traditional streets in Moscow, you can find Стена Цоя (“Tsoi’s wall”) - which remind people of Morrison’s grave in Paris or Lennon’s wall in Prague.

There are plenty of web-sites, russian and foreign, dedicated to Viktor Tsoj: http://www.kinoman.net/, http://www.allkino.narod.ru/, http://www.kinoshnik.net/, http://www.victor-tsoy.narod.ru/, etc.

http://www.zvuki.ru/M/P/4461.

Sergei Shchurakov (1960-2007)

Another influential musician from the Soviet period passed away. The leader and accordionist of the band Orkestr Vermishel', Sergei Shchurakov, died after surgery complications at the age of 47 on August 7th 2007. Before founding Orkestr Vermishel' in 1995 he played with Boris Grebenshchikov's Akvarium and Sergei Kurekhin's "Pop-mekhanika".

I heard Orkestr Vermishel' perform September 2005 in St. Petersburg. It was a quite interesting concert - in a jazz club (JFC Jazz Club), not a rock club. Their music sounds like a mixture of rock, funk, jazz and Western art music with a touch of Irish and French "folk" music (After playing the album "Анабасис" (1996/2001) for my neighbors yesterday they placed it somewhere between Italian and Breton music. They were surprised when they found out that it was a Russian group). The group's consistence besides Guitar, Bass and Drums includes Accordion, Oboe, Cello, Violin and Flutes. This gives the songs a special texture and together with the frequent change of rhythms a unique sound.

See the obituary in the St. Petersburg Times (English) and at Радио Свобода (Russian). For more information about Orkestr Vermishel' check either their website http://www.vo.org.ru/ or the encyclopedia section of Rock-N-Roll.ru.

chernov's choice - st. petersburg times

for those readers who like popular music from st. petersburg, but can't read russian, sergei chernov's weekly friday column in the st. petersburg times ("chernov's choice") is a good way to stay informed about the local scene.

sergei chernov is a journalist in his late 40s (his taste is on the more heavy side of rock - and he does not like russkii rok too much). what makes reading his column interesting is that he has a critical attitude to what is happening in russia and within the music scene (in general, the st. petersburg times is a readable newspaper). he also does a good job tracking the involvement of both old and new musicians in political activities (like zemfira, grebenshchikov and shnurov meeting with the deputy head of the presidential administration vladislav surkov, korol i shut, butusov/u-piter, multfilmy and kukryniksy performing at nashi's 2006 summer camp and kinchev and shevchuk's meeting with the metropolitan kirill)

this weeks column he talks about a review of the rolling stones concert in st. petersburg in the official journal of the st. petersburg city hall, "Петербургский дневник". the review titled "Розы и шипы" is quite amusing....

Sergio Mazzanti)

why is via gra called via gra?

Most people who have been to Russia in the last years probably have encountered Via Gra (in Russian, Виа гра) - either as sonic/visual pollution or as fans of Russian popsa. After finding their CD Биология (released by Sony Music Russia in 2003) at a Danish friend's place I have been enjoying watching my partner and friends cringe every time I listen to the CD (my friend said he bought the CD in Kiev together with CDs by Аквариум and Гражданская Оборона). Anyway, the CD is slightly strange containing remixes of several of the albums songs (the album contains 8 different songs and 13 tracks). The songs are mainly accompanied by a slightly distorted electric guitar, drum machine, keyboard and bass and the sound is popish, although not as synthetic as e.g. Жанна Фриске.

Anyway, back to the name. The group's three female singers drape the album cover wearing very very short dresses showing a lot of leg. Here is a picture of the cover:

Most people not familiar with the Soviet Union could (or would) thus interpret the name as a metaphor for three ladies which fulfill the same function as the potency pill Viagra. However the name is also an allusion to the first attempt to bring Soviet popular music groups under state control: the ВИА (Вокально-Инструментальный Ансамбль - Vocal-Instrumental ensemble) which emerged in 1966. (For a list of some ВИАs from the 1960s to the 1980s visit viaansambles.narod.ru).

Sergio Mazzanti)

Post Soviet popular music outside the post Soviet space

While the study of post Soviet popular music could be limited to the post Soviet geographical sphere (e.g. Russia, Ukraine) that would not cover all the Russian/Ukrainian/Belorussian (and other) language music within that area. Due to large waves of emigration to mainly Germany, Israel and the United States there are a lot of (mainly) Russian speaking communities outside the former Soviet Union. These groups still have strong connections to their origin (home country is not quite accurate, since the Soviet Union ceased to exist...) and these ties also include music. These communities provide a market for groups singing in Russian like Akvarium, Auktsyon, Billy's Band, Iva Nova, Markscheider Kunst, Leningrad and others. This is an important factor enabling them to tour outside the former Soviet Union (when talking about a tour to the US, Efr, the singer from Markscheider Kunst, told me that they mainly played for emigrants).

However, the emigrants themselves also make music and sing in Russian. In line with this there are organizations like the (The Russian Rock Club of America) and Пи-Рок (Pi-Rock - Germany) aimed at providing a community for these "local" groups, promoting them and as with the Russian Rock Club of America, to organize concerts/festivals. These organizations are primarily orientated towards the emigrant community (although Mikhail Yaroshevskiy, one of the founding members of the Russian Rock Club of America, told me that through press coverage also people with no link to the emigrant community have appeared at their festivals).

But there are also attempts to target both the emigrants and the non-Russian speaking inhabitants. One example is the monthly radio show Schum. Based in Halle (Germany), the show features (mainly) groups from the post Soviet Sphere and Germany (singing in Russian). The show itself is bilingual (Russian, German) thus targeting both a German as well as a Russian speaking audience. The fortnightly event Russendisko in Berlin (Germany) focuses even more on a non Russian speaking audience. The DJs Wladimir Kaminer and Yuriy Gurzhy play music both from the post Soviet sphere as well as from emigrant. According to Yuriy and other regulars only about 15% of the Russendisko's visitors are emigrants.

While emigrant music is not widely listened to in e.g. Russia, the music coming out of Russia is an important element in these emigrant projects. So the study of post Soviet popular music also has to take groups and musical practices outside the former Soviet Union into consideration.

Sergio Mazzanti)
