Remembering Il’ia Kormil’tsev

On February, 18th, in Krasnoiarsk there will be a charitable concert dedicated to the memory of Il’ia Kormil’tsev. Due to my many jobs and various duties it was difficult for me to honor the memory of this protagonist of Soviet and Russian rock at the proper time, who died on February 4th last year. The most famous Russian rock-poet, composer of several songs of such groups, like Urfin Dzhius, Nastia and Nautilus Pompilius, translator, literary critic and musicologist, beloved by the whole Soviet and Russian rock-community, Kormil’tsev in the last years provoked stormy discussions due to his political and ideological views; this is particularly evident in his blog at http://karmakom.livejournal.com, where he wrote until the last day of his life.

For this blog, Kormil’tsev is also important because he, together with Ol'ga Surova, is the author of one of the best articles on rock in Russia: “Rok poeziia v russkoi kul’ture: vozniknovenie, bytovanie, evoliutsiia”, “Rock poetry in Russian culture: rise, life, evolution” (“Russkaia rok-poeziia: tekst i kontekst”, Tver’ 1998, pp. 4-32). In this article the rock song is considered a particular genre (see p. 4); the authors pay attention not only to the lyrics of rock songs, as it is often the case in the journal where the article is published (see David-Emil’s post about the last issue http://ps-popular-music.blogspot.com/2007/09/russkaia-rok-poeziia-9.html), but also to music and society. “The aim of the article – the two researchers write – is to try to determine the peculiarity of the rise and life of this genre in our culture and to propose a certain scheme of its evolution” (ib.).

Regardless of his socio-political views, which one does not have to share, Kormil’tsev left an indelible mark on the history of Soviet and Russian rock music, where he occupies one of the most important places.

Inter alia, useful information can be found in Wikipedia and in the section dedicated to Kormil’tsev of Nautilus Pompilius’ official site http://www.nautilus.ru/kormiltsev/music/.

Remembering Maik Naumenko

Only a few days after Viktor Tsoi we remember another protagonist of Russian rock, Mikhail “Maik” Naumenko, the leader of the rock group Zoopark. Also in this case the circumstances of his death are not completely clear yet (it’s not clear if he broke his head or had a heart attack). Together with Tsoi and Aleksandr Bashlachev, Maik is the symbol of the end of an era: the era of “Soviet rock”.

Post Soviet Russia did not forget its former star: in 2005 DDT, Akvarium, MV, Chizh and other Russian rock groups celebrated Maik’s 50th birthday with a big concert; there was also a tribute compilation CD called "Uezdnyi Gorod N - 20 let Spustia" released by Tropillo's Antrop records the same year (see http://www.belowzeroclub.com/node/246). But there is no “Maik’s wall”, web sites on Zoopark are quite scarce and poor (http://www.mikenaumenko.ru/; http://www.mike-zoo.kiev.ua/) and his songs are not very popular in today’s Russia. But his role for the development of Russian rock was not less important than that of Tsoi’s: he embodied better than anyone before in the USSR the whole concept of a Western rocker - he achieved a lot translating and naturalizing a foreign musical genre. I consciously use the word “translated” (from latin “trans” + “ferre”, to carry), because his activity was similar to medieval writers, who translated Byzantine texts and in this way built the foundations of Russian literature. Their aim was to express the original texts in the most faithful way and this step was essential for an emerging culture.

A. Veselovsky’s conception of “borrowing” can be useful to understand the role of “translators” for the development of a culture: “The borrowing presuppose in the perceiver not an empty place, but meeting currents [vstrechnye techenia], a similar direction of thought, analogue to forms of fantasy” (Разыскания в области русского духовного стиха. 1889: 115).

Maik translated both the music and the lyrics of famous Western rock groups, something that I. Kormil’tsev calls “cultural retellings” (“культурные пересказы”. 1998: 17). He also gave himself an English nickname and was very skeptical about the success of Russian rock abroad: “They have their excellent groups, why should they need us…” (from an interview in 1990 // Право на рок, Тверь 1996). He however brought to Russia only what Russian rock needed and he was able to use the imported tradition in a creative way. Translating English words and expressions to Russian, Maik created a “Russian rock language”, that the eighties groups appropriated.

The most useful material about Maik and Zoopark can be found in the book Pravo na rok (edited by A. Rybin and others, Tver’ 1996), a collection of “what we remember about Maik” (from Rybin’s introduction). I should quote also A. Gunitsky’s article “Maik Naumenko: O Zooparke”, containing both the last interview with Maik (may 1991) and an interview with Maik’s friends after his death.

Remembering Viktor Tsoi

August 15th, 1990: Viktor Tsoi, the singer and leader of the St. Petersburg group “Kino” fell asleep while driving his car and fatally crashed against a bus. 17 years has passed since then, but his memory has only slightly faded over time.
Tsoi couldn’t see the fall of the Soviet Union, but neither the crisis of the soviet rock movement: it could be said that he died in the best time to become a myth, the symbol of the “golden era” of russkii rok.
The old generation of singers, like B.G., Maik, Shevchuk, Kinchev, etc., dedicated some verses or whole songs to Kino’s leader. Dmitrii Reviakin’s poem “Iagoda” (Berry, 1998) ends with these words:

To die immortal
Like Tsoi

Tequilajazzz, one of the more interesting groups of the new generation, begins his first album (Streliali, 1993) with a short quotation of Tsoj’s “Gruppa krovi” (Blood group). Even Leningrad’s singer Sergei Shnurov, making fun of almost every Russian rock group of the past and the present, considered Gruppa krovi “his favorite song”, as he wrote in a composition with the same title (in Dachniki, 2000). All kinds of Russian musicians participated to Viktor Tsoi’s tribute, in 2000 http://www.zvuki.ru/M/P/4461.
It seems that Kino is the only rock group that almost all Russians like, at least the generation from 30 to 50 years.

Walking down “Stari Arbat”, one of the more traditional streets in Moscow, you can find Стена Цоя (“Tsoi’s wall”) - which remind people of Morrison’s grave in Paris or Lennon’s wall in Prague.

There are plenty of web-sites, russian and foreign, dedicated to Viktor Tsoj: http://www.kinoman.net/, http://www.allkino.narod.ru/, http://www.kinoshnik.net/, http://www.victor-tsoy.narod.ru/, etc.

http://www.zvuki.ru/M/P/4461.
